Big Rapids Riverwalk
Conveniently located in the center of Big Rapids, Michigan you’ll discover one of the area’s most loved features, Riverwalk. A 2.64 miles stretch of nature at its finest.
The pathway is completely accessible to all as it roles gently along the majestic Muskegon River. Starting at historic downtown Big Rapids, Riverwalk winds its way to Northend Riverside Park. Riverwalk offers several connections to the White Pine Trail, part of Michigan “Rails to Trails” system that runs from Comstock Park to Cadillac.
Riverwalk is an award winning, multifunctional pathway giving access to fishing platforms, benches, bike racks and picnic areas on either side of the 250 foot wooden bridge that spans the Muskegon River.
The Muskegon River offers many recreational opportunities! For those who love canoeing, tubing, fishing or just enjoy the splendor of getting back to nature, this is definitely the place for you.
So, take a morning jog in spring, view the scenery while biking in the summer, enjoy a colorful walk in the fall or cross-country ski in the winter.

White Pine Rails to Trails
The White Pine Trail is a 93 mile rail trail than runs from Grand Rapids to Cadillac, Michigan. The trail follows the former path of the Penn Central Railroad. The White Pine Rail Trail is the longest rail trail in Michigan and one of the longest rail trails in the country. Even the White Pine Trail is extremely long, there is good access to lodging, food and supplies along its entire route.

Ferris State University
In 1884, later a Governor and U.S. Senator, Woodbridge N. Ferris established Ferris Institute located in Big Rapids. The Institute has grown and is now a University with an enrollment of approximately 13,000 students. The University offers several diversified curriculum in seven separate schools, including the College of Optometry and College of Pharmacy.
Many of the local amenities come from Ferris State University, a college of over 13,000 students, which is located along the southern edge of town. Students, professors and educators bring a dimension to the community which encourages acceptance of newcomers and new ideas.
