Rothbury is located in southern Oceana County in Grant Township. This small town functions primarily as a commuter city to the greater Muskegon area, which is only about 12 miles to the south. It is also supported by a large iron foundry on the east side of town. Rothbury was first established around 1865 when its first settler, Nelson Green moved here. It became known as Greenwood after Green gave the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad right of way to his property. In 1879, the name was changed to Rothbury by the village, naming it after the post office station, as there was already another Greenwood, (in Alcona County) in existence.
